Your Average Bear, 2023
Team size: ~20
Role: Gameplay, Level, System Designer
Dev Time: ~ 1 year
Background
Your Average Bear began as my capstone project at the University of Utah and evolved into a successful indie title. It’s a charming, casual stealth game where players control a bear on a mission to steal food from campers and share the bounty with forest friends. The project was a commercial and critical hit on Steam, where it currently holds a "Very Positive" rating (230+ reviews).
Contribution
I served as the primary designer for Your Average Bear, overseeing gameplay mechanics, core systems, and level architecture. Beyond designing the tutorial and main stages, I authored the Game Design Document (GDD), which served as the "single source of truth" to maintain a unified vision across the team.
-
Mechanic Innovation: I focused on translating "wacky" creative ideas into functional gameplay. A standout feature was the Branch Tool, which allows the bear to hold up branches and camouflage as a tree—a quirky yet highly effective stealth mechanic that resonated with players.
-
Level Design Philosophy: To cater to a casual audience, I prioritized intuitive navigation and smooth progression. I implemented distinct landmarks and unique area gimmicks to guide players, while ensuring each challenge offered multiple solutions to reward creative experimentation.
